CJ Olive Young uses AI to serve foreign shoppers
· UPIJuly 8 (Asia Today) -- CJ Olive Young is expanding artificial intelligence-based services in its stores as it seeks to attract more global customers and improve the K-beauty shopping experience.
The company said Wednesday it is operating an AI Shopping Assistant mainly at multilevel stores with a high share of foreign visitors and strong demand for shopping information.
The AI Shopping Assistant allows customers to communicate with an AI avatar in real time through a kiosk. Shoppers can check product information, inventory and store locations and receive product recommendations based on their skin type and preferences.
The service supports eight languages, including English, Chinese and Japanese, allowing foreign customers to browse products with fewer language barriers.
Olive Young said the AI service is designed to improve both customer experience and store efficiency. The system can answer repeated questions about payment methods and tax refunds, while employees focus on product consultation and customer service.
The company also plans to use customer data to strengthen store operations. By analyzing time spent in stores and frequently asked questions, Olive Young said it can better understand foreign customers' needs and shopping patterns and use that information to improve store management.
Olive Young is also expanding an AI interpretation service to address language difficulties during consultations with employees. The company said it improved translation accuracy by adding AI technology to existing portable translators and expanded the number of supported languages to 38.
Foreign customers can communicate with employees in real time through QR codes or tablets inside stores. Olive Young said the AI interpretation service has been trained on K-beauty terminology and product information, making it possible to provide more accurate consultations on skin concerns, ingredients and product use.
The company has previously invested in shopping services for foreign customers, including foreign-language guidance, global payment systems and instant tax refund services. Olive Young said the new AI-based store services will improve the shopping process from product discovery to consultation and purchase and strengthen its position as a global K-beauty platform.
"As the popularity of K-beauty brings more foreign visitors to South Korea, it has become increasingly important to improve shopping convenience for global customers," an Olive Young official said. "We will continue to improve AI-based store services and expand them to more locations so customers around the world can experience K-beauty."
