White House hosting AI leaders to discuss evaluation framework
by Joe Fisher · UPIAug. 4 (UPI) -- The Trump administration is hosting leaders in the AI industry on Tuesday to discuss a framework plan for evaluating AI models.
Administration officials will meet with leaders from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google at the White House as they bring forward a voluntary framework for the government to evaluate new AI models, The New York Times, CNBC and CBS News report, citing unnamed sources. President Donald Trump called for the framework plan in an executive order in June.
The program to be proposed by the Trump administration may allow the government to have early access to new AI models up to 30 days before they become more widely available. During that early access period, the government could weigh the potential risks associated with the models.
Trump's executive order restricts the government from establishing mandatory federal licensing, permitting or preclearance requirements for new AI models.
The Trump administration has largely taken a hands-off approach to AI, but the emergence of Chinese open-weight AI models and their use in cyberattacks recently has officials weighing taking action.
Some of the leading U.S. tech companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have called for the government to take action to regulate Chinese AI models. Other companies like Nvidia have opposed reining in open source models, arguing that they could be used for cybersecurity and that they encourage innovation in the field.
Chinese AI models have performed favorably against those developed by U.S. companies of late, including Kimi, developed by Moonshot AI based in Beijing.
Tuesday's White House meeting will give tech companies the opportunity to weigh in on the debate face-to-face.
"The United States leads the world in AI innovation and President Trump's successful approach will keep it that way, Liz Huston, a White House spokeswoman, said in a statement.
