UK weather: Snow to cover Britain as -5C polar blast hits turning maps purple this month
by Joseph Wilkes, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/joseph-wilkes/, Aditi Rane · Birmingham LiveThe UK is bracing for an Arctic blast that will see temperatures plummet, snowfall and severe cold conditions sweep across the country. Some areas could potentially hit lows of -5°C.
Weather maps from WX Charts reveal some regions turning purple, indicating an incoming polar air mass set to cover the UK with freezing conditions and widespread frost. The latest data suggests this cold front is due to arrive around November 21, bringing significant temperature drops and snow showers, particularly in the north.
Forecast maps show temperatures at the 850 hPa level (approximately 1,500 metres above sea level) could fall well below freezing, with purple and dark blue shades dominating, signifying a severe cold front. This icy air mass, originating from the Arctic, will sweep across the UK, affecting Scotland, northern England, and potentially other areas further south.
Snow depth projections suggest parts of Scotland and northern England are likely to see accumulating snow, with forecasts indicating up to 2 cm in some regions. This snow coverage could cause difficult driving conditions and disrupt travel.
Alongside snowfall, widespread frosty conditions are expected, with minimum temperatures plunging to as low as -5°C in certain rural areas, especially in Scotland and northern parts of England, reports the Express.
The minimum temperature map underscores these colder areas, with deep greens and blues indicating regions that will face subzero temperatures. Frost is anticipated to blanket most areas overnight, leading to icy patches and concerns about road safety and heating needs.
As the polar air descends over the UK, authorities are encouraging people to brace for winter conditions. Delays should be expected on impacted routes, and drivers are being warned to take care due to possible icy roads and reduced visibility from snow showers.
