I tried tomato soup from Aldi, Heinz, Morrisons and Lidl to see how they compared

I tried supermarket tomato soup and found 'ultimate comfort' in a can £1.15 cheaper than Heinz

I tried soup from Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons and Heinz and one was a clear winner

There's something ultimately comforting about tomato soup. Whether you're coming in out of the cold, or just fancy a quick but hearty lunch, it feels like the perfect autumnal meal.

Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup costs a whopping £1.70 per can which is pricey, especially if you have a whole family to feed. So I decided to try budget soups from Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl to see if any were as good for a fraction of the price.

Interestingly, my former colleague Rebecca taste tested tomato soups back in 2022 and I was shocked to see how much the prices had gone up since then. I've included the prices she paid so you can see the difference in just a couple of years.

Heinz Tomato Soup

Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup costs £1.70 from Morrisons for 400g, which works out to 85p per half can portion. By contrast, in April 2022, this same can cost just £1.

This had the most powerful tomato flavour of all the cans. It tasted fresher, more like homemade soup with fresh vine-ripened tomatoes.

Reading the ingredients on the tin, it's easy to see why. It contains 89 percent tomatoes, cream and herb and spice extracts. Per half can portion, it contains 9.7g of sugar, 1.1g of salt and 1.7g of protein. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Morrisons Savers Tomato soup

Savers Tomato Soup costs 55p for 400g from Morrisons, which works out to 28p per half can portion. Rebecca didn't review Morrisons soup back in 2022 so we don't have a price comparison on this one - but it's already cheaper than all the rest.

This tasted amazing. It was really thick and creamy and packed a powerful sweet tomato punch. There was no pull-cap so I needed to use a tin opener to open it but that was no big deal.

Made with 67 percent tomatoes with mustard seed and flavourings, it contained 8.9g of sugar, 1g protein and 1g salt per half can. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Lidl Tomato Soup

Lidl Tomato Soup costs 62p for 400g, which works out to 31p per half can portion. However, in 2022, this tin cost just 40p. Per half can portion, it contains 10g of sugar, 1.2g of salt and 2.2g of protein.

It was made with tomato puree rather than tomatoes but it still had a lovely flavour. I wasn't so keen on the consistency. Where was the cream, Lidl? It seemed more watery than Heinz and all the other supermarket brands. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

Aldi Tomato Soup

Aldi Tomato Soup costs 62p for 400g, which works out to 31p per half can portion - just the same as Lidl, both today and back in April 2022.

Each half can portion contains 9.7g of sugar, 1.1g of salt and 1.7g of protein. Just like Heinz, this was made with 89 percent tomatoes, together with cream and flavourings.

It had a lovely creamy consistency but there wasn't quite such a punchy tomato flavour that was in some of the others, which was odd due to its high tomato content. It tasted a little bland in comparison. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

Overall verdict

There was a clear winner here. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the zesty, fresh flavour of the Heinz I had discovered something better. I felt the Morrisons flavour was delicious and it was super creamy. It was the ultimate comfort food and I didn't want my bowl of soup to end. And it was £1.15 cheaper than Heinz. Winner.
