More staff are set to be hired to review speed camera footage.

New speed camera update as Midlands drivers warned they are more likely to be caught

by · Birmingham Live

A new speed camera crackdown is set to be launched across the West Midlands in a bid to combat dangerous driving. The West Midlands Mayor and police chiefs have pledged to review more speed camera footage in a bid to ensure speeding drivers are punished.

The increased focus is part of a mission to cut road deaths and injuries on the region's roads. Now motorists have been warned they will be less likely to get away with speeding offences, with police chiefs also planning to make more use of dashcam footage of reckless motorists sent to them by the public.

Officials have pledged "funding for extra staff to review speed camera and dashcam footage to increase the number of people prosecuted for speeding and dangerous driving". Some speeding cases end up being cancelled by police forces due to a lack of resources to prosecute drivers in time.

So while a driver might get flashed by a camera, they sometimes end up getting away with it as offenders are supposed to be punished within in a certain time limit. Mayor Richard Parker and senior officers now want to change that to ensure as many speeders are dealt with as possible.

Brumwish 2024 - buy a gift for a child in need

BrumWish 2024 is Birmingham Live's festive drive to get thousands of gifts to children and young people across our city - among them the homeless, the vulnerable, kids in care, kids who are poorly or struggling, and kids who have little.

There are THREE simple ways to help.

  1. Buy a new gift from the Brumwish 2024 Amazon giftlist. In just a click your donation will be whizzing its way to our volunteers at Edgbaston Stadium.
  2. Donate money to the appeal fund hosted by Thrive Together Birmingham - this will help pay for gifts for kids with specialist needs or specific wishes.
  3. Buy a gift and, even better, rope in friends, neighbours and workmates to do the same, then drop off your pressies at Edgbaston Stadium, Edgbaston Road, B5 7QU on Friday 6th December, 10am - 3pm; Saturday 7th December, 10am - 1pm; or Monday 9th December, 10am - 1pm. Volunteers will be there to help you. Please don't wrap your gifts. You can also drop off by arrangement until Monday 16th December - contact Louise on 07469 979286.

Thanks to our partnership with #Toys4Birmingham, every single gift will find a good home in the loving care of a child living in B&Bs or hotels, hostels or refuges, children receiving support from specialist organisations and charities, and families being supported by children's centres and charities around the city.

Making up the Brumwish and Toys4Birmingham gang are Thrive Together Birmingham, Birmingham Playcare Network, Warwickshire Cricket Foundation (the charitable arm of Warwickshire County Cricket Club), Birmingham Forward Steps and BirminghamLive/Birmingham Mail.

Thank you to Amazon UK and the amazing team at the Sutton Coldfield depot for their support.

The Mayor said: “Too many lives are left devastated by the dangerous driving of a few irresponsible motorists who treat our roads as a racetrack. This action plan sets out how we are going to make our roads safer for everyone and save lives. This includes putting more people to work reviewing dashcam and CCTV footage so we can bring reckless drivers to justice.

“And we have started the search for a person to fill our new role of Road Safety Commissioner. This is the first time we have had a dedicated commissioner to improve the safety of our roads. This person will use their profile to promote road safety and make sure we are delivering on this action plan to make journeys for everyone safer.”
