Police are concerned many drivers are unaware of recent Highway Code changes.

Most drivers are wrong about this Highway Code rule

Police chiefs urge drivers to improve their knowledge of important road rules

Most drivers like to think they know what they're doing on the roads and are familiar with the rules. But research shows that isn't always the case, particularly following recent updates to the Highway Code.

Police chiefs are now urging motorists to brush up their knowledge of road rules. One of these new rules relates to cyclists and what they are allowed to do on the roads.

For many drivers, if they found a cyclist in their path in the middle of the road they may immediately become frustrated and start sounding their horn. Lots of drivers assume cyclists always need to stick to the left so vehicles can easily pass. But this is not always the case.

Cyclists can ride in the middle of a lane on quiet roads and in slow-moving traffic. Crucially, cyclists can also ride two abreast - something which can infuriate motorists if they feel their path is blocked. A recent study found around half of drivers were unaware cyclists were allowed to ride in this way.

Warwickshire Police said in a message to motorists: "Cyclists riding two abreast can be a subject of heated debate, but the updated Highway Code advises that cyclists may ride two abreast as long as they are considerate of other road users: Highway Code Rule 66: …be considerate of the needs of other road users when riding in groups.

"You can ride two abreast and it can be safer to do so, particularly in larger groups or when accompanying children or less experienced riders. Be aware of drivers behind you and allow them to overtake (for example, by moving into single file or stopping) when you feel it is safe to let them do so."

Inspector Si Paull said: "Knowing the 2022 updates to the Highway Code is really important so that all road users understand that they must consider each other and do what they can to safely share the space on the roads.”
