O2 has issued an urgent scam alert. Tech giant O2, which is rivalled by the likes of Vodafone, EE, and more, has issued an urgent scam alert to customers who own either an iPhone from Apple or Samsung devices, which use Android.

O2, the UK's largest network provider, has warned that it can also be a busy period for scammers as fraudsters look to cash in on tech fans trying to get their hands on the latest models from the tech giants, as new Apple and Samsung phones are rolled out.

In an update to O2 customers, the mobile phone giant said: "Fraudulent activity often increases during device launches, and scammers may reach out with offers that seem too good to be true, such as steep discounts or free devices.

"We’re calling on customers to watch out for three signs you might be a target of scammers, and issues advice on how to stay safe." They warned against 'too good to be true' offers, and said remember O2 will never ask you to provide passwords or bank details over the phone or by text. If you are asked private details, end the conversation, and remember not to engage with messages and never click on dodgy links. They said: "Whether it's a tempting 30% or 40% discount on your bill or a free new phone or tablet, scammers will promise anything and everything to try and trick customers into handing over sensitive information.

"Once they have this, fraudsters use it to clear security and take out a device in the victim's name, leaving them responsible for the bill." The firm added: "Scammers typically try to reach you first, so it’s important to contact O2 immediately if you receive any package unexpectedly.

"O2 can check for any suspicious activity on your account, help protect it from further misuse, and provide a pre-paid label to ensure the device is safely returned to the official O2 Returns Centre." O2 said: "Think you might have got a text from a scammer?

"Don’t just ignore it – take a few seconds to forward it to us on 7726 (which spells SPAM on your phone’s keypad). Reporting messages this way is free, keeps you safe and allows us to block fraudsters’ numbers so we can prevent or shut down similar scams faster in future. "
