In summary:

  • Tech Advisor reports that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will feature a dual 50Mp camera system but notably lacks a dedicated telephoto lens unlike its predecessor.
  • The device is expected to launch July 22 with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, 12GB RAM, and larger 4,800mAh battery.
  • This camera downgrade may limit photographic capabilities despite both lenses supporting autofocus and 8K video recording at 30fps.

Fresh spec leaks for the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide highlight why it might not be threatening the top of the foldable league table just yet.

We’ve been looking forward to Samsung’s wider foldable launch for some time now. Together with Apple’s iPhone Ultra, likely to launch mere months later, it heralds the arrival of a new, more tablet-like foldable experience.

However, one area that has given us pause has been the camera. From early leaks, we’ve seen that Samsung is seemingly looking to implement a dual camera system rather than the full triple set-up of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 (pictured below).

That’s just been confirmed by a pair of reports, one from SamMobile and the other from Dutch website GalaxyClub.

It’s claimed that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will feature a pair of 50Mp cameras – one on regular wide duty (with an f/1.8 aperture), and the other handling ultra-wide landscape shots (with an f/1.9 aperture).

There will be no dedicated telephoto provision, meaning you’ll need to crop in on that main sensor for your close-ups. And given that we’re not getting the 200Mp sensor of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, such a cropping technique is likely to yield limited results.

Both cameras should get autofocus, and both should be capable of up to 8K video capture at 30fps.

Between them, the reports claim that the Fold 8 Wide will pack a pair of 10Mp selfies cameras, one on the internal display and the other on the external screen. That’s a feature it shares with the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Second-tier foldable

Given the leaked dummy units for the iPhone Ultra, which is expected to subscribe to a similar form factor, Apple’s wide foldable will have similar photographic limitations.

Other specs for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide include a top-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and a starting spec of 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It could also have a 4,800mAh battery, which is actually larger than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Recent reports suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will join its foldable siblings, plus the Galaxy Watch 9 and the Galaxy Glasses, at a London-based Unpacked event on 22 July.

We recently learned that Samsung’s next foldables could be the first devices to ship with Google’s Gemini Intelligence feature out of the box.
