The US wants Google to sell Chrome and unbundle Android

by · Android Headlines

According to a new report by Bloomberg, the US really wants Google to sell Chrome and unbundle Android. To be more specific, the DOJ (Department of Justice) lawyers will try to make it happen.

The US will ask the court to force Google to sell Chrome in an attempt to break search monopoly

Why is that? Well, all of this is being done in an attempt to break Google’s search monopoly, it seems. The DOJ is planning to make a request to be done, a request will be issued to Google’s antitrust trial judge.

The main request concerns Chrome, it seems. The DOJ sees its sale as the main move towards its goal. Needless to say, Chrome is the world’s most popular browser, and it’s not even close.

The DOJ lawyers said that Chrome’s use in cross-promoting Google’s products is one of the main things that is limiting available channels and incentives for competition to flourish.

Android’s separation from Search and Google Play will also be requested

Now, in addition to selling Chrome, the DOJ will also propose Android’s separation from Search and Google Play. Google will not be asked to sell off Android, however, it seems. Google feared that was also come to pass, initially.

What else? Well, Google will also be asked to share more information with advertisers. All that will be done in an attempt to “give them more control over where their ads appear”.

Another thing that Bloomberg mentioned is the DOJ’s recommendation that Google gives “websites more options to prevent their content from being used by Google’s artificial intelligence products”.

The DOJ will also try to ban exclusive contracts

And finally, the DOJ will push for a “ban on the type of exclusive contracts that were at the center of the case against Google”. That deal with Apple to keep Google exclusive in Safari is one of them.

The source also mentioned a statement from Google’s regulatory affairs VP. Lee-Anne Mulholland, who said that the DOJ “continues to push a radical agenda that goes far beyond the legal issues in this case”. As a reminder, the DOJ said, last month, that Google breakup is a possibility.
