Apple Launches iPhone 17e: More Power & MagSafe, Cheaper 512GB Variant

by · Android Headlines

Apple fans usually focus their attention on flagship reveals in September. However, it seems the company has carved out a new tradition for the early months of the year. Apple just announced the iPhone 17e, a successor to last year’s budget-friendly model that even brings some “Pro” features down to a more accessible price point.

The move marks a significant change in how Apple handles its most affordable smartphones. Historically, entry-level models like the older SE series went years without an update. Now, for the second year in a row, Apple has delivered an annual refresh. So, from now on, the company plans to treat the “e” series with the same consistency as its high-end siblings.

iPhone 17e: MagSafe support and A19 Power for $599, now with 256GB base

One of the most practical upgrades in this announcement involves the internal storage. While the starting price remains at $599, Apple has eliminated the 128GB tier. The base iPhone 17e now starts with 256GB of storage. This effectively gives users twice the capacity for the same investment. For those with even higher storage needs, a 512GB version is available for $799. Interestingly, this variant is actually $100 cheaper than the equivalent high-capacity model from the previous generation.

In terms of aesthetics, the device maintains the familiar 6.1-inch form factor. It will be available in classic black and white, alongside a new “soft pink” finish. The display also receives a durability boost with Ceramic Shield 2, which promises better scratch resistance and reduced glare compared to the outgoing 16e.

Improved internals

Perhaps the most requested feature making its way to the entry-level lineup is MagSafe. Last year’s model supported basic wireless charging, but it lacked the magnetic ring that defines the modern iPhone experience. With the addition of MagSafe, users can now use magnetic wallets, battery packs, and stands. More importantly, it enables faster 15W Qi2 wireless charging, doubling the speed of the previous version.

The iPhone 17e doesn’t cut many corners when it comes to performance. It uses the same A19 chip found in the standard iPhone 17, ensuring it has the processing power required for the latest Apple Intelligence features. Connectivity also gets a boost thanks to the new C1X cellular modem. Apple claims this in-house chip is up to twice as fast as the modem found in the 16e. This should translate to better power efficiency and more reliable signals.

Plus, the device retains its IP68 rating for water resistance and continues to support essential safety features like Emergency SOS via satellite.

Photography and availability

The camera system utilizes a 48MP Fusion sensor. While it technically uses a single hardware lens, Apple uses sensor cropping to provide what they call “optical-quality 2x Telephoto” performance. This allows the phone to behave as if it has two dedicated cameras, capturing detailed portraits and 4K Dolby Vision video.

For those looking to upgrade, pre-orders for the iPhone 17e open this Wednesday, March 4, at 6:15 am PT/9:15 am ET. The phones will officially hit retail shelves and begin reaching customers a week later on March 11.
