Another Highly Regarded PSVR2 Dev on the Brink After Mass Layoffs

Survios loses most of its staff

by · Push Square

Alien: Rogue Incursion and CREED: Rise to Glory studio Survios has reportedly lost most of its employees in a round of layoffs.

Picked up by Game Developer, a series of LinkedIn posts suggests most workers have lost their jobs. Combat designer Dylan Ralston said the LA studio will be "essentially shuttered" and all the "team members responsible for development [are] being let go".

The claim was supported by senior game designer Alissa Smith, who said she and "the majority of the development team was impacted by layoffs at Survios". Senior technical sound designer Tim Schumann also reported he'd lost his job and "saw this coming a while ago".

Survios considers itself "the world's leading VR games studio", and has worked on PSVR and PSVR2 experiences like Sprint Vector, Raw Data, and the aforementioned Alien and CREED games. In the case of Alien: Rogue Incursion, it was actually pitched as a "Part One" when it launched, so today's news will likely impact the possibility of a second part ever releasing.

Polyarc loses staff amid funding troubles

This follows on from mass layoffs at Polyarc, which made the two Moss games for Sony's headsets, widely considered two of the best titles for the devices. It was unable to secure funding "following the cancellation of a major project".

Alien: Rogue Incursion, the developer's latest release, launched to mixed reviews, garnering a Metacritic rating of 74.

Our own PSVR2 review lined up with that average, concluding in a 7/10 score: "Alien: Rogue Incursion is a solid first attempt from Survios to capture the iconic sci-fi franchise. If you’re a fan of the series like we are, then you’ll be giddy as you first get to hold your own pulse rifle; you’ll shiver as your motion tracker’s pulsating tone gets higher; and you’ll revel in the disgusting details of the H.R Giger-inspired Alien nests."

They were one of the most prolific studios in the VR space so it's sad to see them like that.
VR in general is becoming even more niche now then it was before. There's just no money in it now.
Shuei Yosida was asked about what happened to PSVR 2 and he said no comment. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony had more plans for the headset but it was jettisoned for other priorities like their live service push. Which from a business POV I can understand but it still sucks, especially when Sony didn't even bother to port over the best PSVR 1 games.
