Sorry, Dragon Age Fans, Don't Expect Another One Anytime Soon

"I don’t know who at BioWare would pitch a Dragon Age"

It sounds as though Dragon Age may well return to dormancy for quite a long time.

Mark Darrah, former producer of the series, is of very little faith the fantasy RPG franchise will be back anytime soon.

He's said so in an interview with FRVR, where he talks about a very difficult environment within publisher EA when it comes to pitching games, even for long-established IPs.

Following the launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which failed to sell very well, Darrah doesn't expect anyone will try for another one for the foreseeable.

"I have no concept of who could, would, possibly pitch that at EA, he says. "EA owns a frightening number of IPs that are dormant...

"What I’ve heard is if you go and decide you're going to make a [game based on an IP]... the instant you're about to start, suddenly like three different people who think they control it come out of the woodwork and essentially like rip you apart and chew you up and spit you out."

Darrah is saying that, if a studio other than BioWare tried to pitch a new Dragon Age game, it would be snuffed out very quickly by BioWare higher-ups to keep control of the franchise.

"The problem is I don’t know who at BioWare would pitch a Dragon Age," he says.

"So the other option is somebody else within the EA organisation decides they're gonna pitch a Dragon Age and, what I expect would happen if they try to do that, is somebody at BioWare would essentially become one of those people jumping under the vents to rip that person apart. I suspect that it wouldn't happen for a variety of reasons."

So, between The Veilguard falling flat, BioWare being busy with Mass Effect, and over-protective executives gatekeeping the series, it sounds as though Dragon Age is unlikely to see the light of day for a long while.

It's unfortunate, but it seems the series will be thrown in with EA's other dormant franchises, like Need for Speed, Dead Space, Burnout, Mirror's Edge, and so many others.
