PS5 Pro Actually Gives You Almost All Its 2TB of Storage to use
1.89TB of space is all yours
by Liam Croft · Push SquareOne of the issues the base PS5 has always struggled with is the measly internal SSD it has, coming in at just 825GB. It's not really enough space to have multiple PS5 titles installed at once, especially given how large the likes of Call of Duty can get. The situation got worse, though, when it was revealed that only 667GB of that space was actually available for you to use, with the rest taken up by system operations.
Tomorrow's new PS5 Pro has more than doubled the SSD size to 2TB, and this time around, Sony is actually letting you use the vast, vast majority of that space for your own needs. As spotted by Techradar, with its full report available in our Round Up of PS5 Pro reviews, it's shared that the PS5 Pro offers 1.89TB of storage for your PS5 games, save data, and captured media.

The outlet has run the numbers and worked out that the PS5 Pro provides you access to 94.5% of the SSD, as opposed to the 80% you can use on the base PS5. If you're then also carrying over a purchased SSD from the original console, it sounds like you'll be set for the rest of the generation in terms of storage space. About Liam Croft
Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he's found playing the latest and greatest PS5 games as well as supporting Derby County. That last detail is his downfall.

Nice! I have another 2Tb to drop in day one too, plus my old reliable 2 Tb sata ssd for backwards compatibility.
Should keep me going for a while.

2.89TB with my additional NVME, then the 1TB of HDD space for PS4 games, oh we’re eating great!
Good news for this glorious morning
Cool. I'll be transfering my current 2tb ssd too and my 4tb drive stacked with PS4 titles. Looks like I'm not going to want for storage space.
I believe the bulk of the OS is stored on the extra DDR5 memory in this unit, which is why it can do this and the OG system cannot...

@Titntin memory doesn't store anything while it is not in use. If the OS was stored in the memory the minute you turned the power off it would vanish from your console.
The suspicion is that the new slower ddr 5 memory is allocated to run the os so the full 16gb ddr 6 is available for running games but this is not the same as storing the OS.
It would be interesting to see if they have just made the os smaller or compressed it better to allow for more of the ssd to be used. A new clean PS5 with the latest OS would tell us.
@Titntin I don't think that would work, while DDR can hold some contents after power cycling, that doesn't make it suitable for use in a console to hold its operating system.
So while the slower memory may well be used to offload OS resources to allow for more to be used for enhanced games, it still needs to load it from somewhere.
Either way it wouldn't account for the storage gains.

I have a new WB Black 4TB ready to put in the Pro when it arrives. Does anyone know what will happen to games already installed on external drives? Will they need to be re-installedor can the drive just be transferred over? I'm guessing the answer is no but am hoping it is yes (I have 4Tb external drive thaat is full of PS4 and PS5 games)

"It's not really enough space to have multiple PS5 titles installed at once"
Strange seeing as I have 11 PS5 titles (plus another 8 PS4 titles) downloaded on my console, with nearly 100GB still to spare!

@cuttlefishjones I expected the PS5 to format the lot too, but according to a Push Square article it can be transferred over.

Still could never work out what the Other stuff was doing to eat up all that otherwise useful space. Swap space, maybe?

No joke the extra 1TB is a big selling point for me.

@TedLassoNikes Try doing that with multiple 100GB+ titles.

Nice to know, but I'll keep that space for game saves only.
My 4TB WD Black SSD (PS5 games) and 8TB WD Black HDD (PS4 games) will be enough for now until the 8TB SSD's go down in price. I've prepared for storage issues in advance and also have an additional 5TB HDD to store my PS5 games I've Platinumed.
@LowDefAl @Medic_alert
Your quite right guys. I thought I'd read the extra Storage was ROM, but having just checked the specs revealed, it is not and both your points are very valid.

More drive space is one of the reasons I was tempted to get a PRO. My 825 + 1TB SSD is always virtually full of PS5 games, and I have to pick and choose carefully what to download and delete. An extra 1.2TB would be welcome.
Not to be that guy but the pro model should also come with the elite controller or what they call it not the standard one.

Never really had an issue. Always hovering about 40gb left as I delete games when I’m finished.
Am I missing something here?
825 - 667 Gb = 158 Gb used for OS / reserved space in base PS5
2.000 - 1.890 Tb = 0.110 Tb / 110 Gb used for OS / reserved space in Pro
Has the pro got slightly more than 2Tb (2.048) or has the OS / reserved space been reduced without the difference being passed on to base PS5?
@Rich33 Well firstly all storage medium advertise a marketing figure based on rounding. The actual storage is never such a round number.
However thats before formatting. Formatting always uses some of the space for the file system, and even then this depends on the block size selected (not always an option presented to users, but sometimes).
So the space "lost" is not strictly the OS but a normal function of how storage works.
How much of the other space is used strictly by the OS or things like working/swap space is up for debate. It's unlikely the OS is using all that space to start with.
It's possible Sony have slimmed things down and may or may not fix this on the base machine in time (they previously gave ram back to developers on PS4).
@Rich33 2048 is actually a very good round number (= 2^11) in computing so it's probably that

Would rather have 1TB and a disc drive
There’s a PS5 Pro? Barely heard about such a thing!

I'm still getting a 4tb on black friday. 2tb to me is good and way better than what we got before. But still not enough.
(Low Def AI - You are quite correct - I meant OS / reserved space and I have corrected my original post.)
You are both probably right, its just that the amount of difference ie 48Gb was much bigger than I expected.
At least its the right way, giving me more space to hoard games!
