Platinum Trophy #30: Toem

Date Earned: 11th September 2021

Dopamine Index:

As a Brit, am I allowed to write a feature this week without mentioning the heatwave? I feel like I have to.

It has nothing to do with Toem, or earning Trophies, but it's relatable, isn't it?

Blimey, hasn't it been hot these last few days? Phew!

I'm being a bit facetious but the fact is it has been uncomfortably warm. So much so, I've barely played my PS5 this week. Hard to do when you have a fan in one hand and a mini Magnum in the other.

Alright, that's enough talk about the weather. Now to segue into Toem. It's gonna be really smooth. Here goes: you can't spell meteorology without Toem!

And speaking of Toem, what a lovely little game. I think it might be among my favourite indie games of the generation.

There are certainly indies that are more innovative, or more polished, or have greater stories, but this cute little game about taking photos and solving simple puzzles just really struck a chord with me.

I love the relaxed vibe and friendly characters. The black and white visuals pair nicely with the chunky, illustrated look. Each diorama-like environment is dotted with fun secrets and new goofballs to meet.

While the monochrome style might look a little dull in screenshots, I think the world Toem creates is filled with personality; it's a pleasure to spend time here, exploring every nook and cranny with your camera with zero pressure.

The change in viewpoint when you go into camera mode is great, as well. The world looks great in its isometric form and when you view it in first-person, and I love the idea that you have to literally alter your perspective in order to see details you would otherwise miss.

It's a real "stop and smell the roses" sort of game. It's about community, kindness, and curiosity. I just really like Toem, guys.

It also has a very fun Trophy list that encourages you to really engage with everything at your disposal.

I remember a couple of them gave me some trouble, but in hindsight they were pretty easy to crack — I just needed to be observant and use the things the game handed to me.

It's a fun platinum, and a very charming adventure. Bring on the sequel!

Cheers, Toem.
