Las Vegas airport passenger traffic plunges 9.2% in August

Passenger levels at Harry Reid International Airport continued their downward spiral in August, with monthly totals down 9.2 percent from a year ago, the Clark County Department of Aviation reported Tuesday.

The airport serving Las Vegas reported 4.1 million passengers for the month, with domestic arrivals and departures off 10.2 percent to 3.8 million while international traffic was up 3.9 percent to 293,672.

The August totals bring the eight-month count to 34.4 million passengers, down 7.2 percent from a year ago.

Domestic arrivals and departures over eight months were down 7.2 percent to 31.6 million while the total number of international travelers fell 7.1 percent to 2.2 million.

Discount air carrier Spirit Airlines discontinued operations in May, reducing the number of airline seats coming into the Las Vegas market.

Of the five leading domestic air carriers serving Las Vegas, Denver-based Frontier Airlines had the greatest improvement, up 35.3 percent for the month to 436,475 passengers. Market leader Southwest Airlines was down 4.6 percent for the month to 1.7 million passengers, while No. 3 Delta Air Lines was off 8.8 percent to 393,403 and No. 5 American Airlines dropped 1.6 percent to 345,363. No. 4 United Airlines was up 1.8 percent to 359,742.

On the international side, Eurowings soared 39.5 percent to 11,306 passengers and Air France was up 14.4 percent to 7,710.

Air Canada and Mexican discount carrier Volaris had the most international volume for the month with 42,986 (up 38.6 percent) and 41,185 (up 21.1 percent), respectively.

Canadian discounter WestJet, British Airways, KLM and Korean Air all had fewer passengers in August than they had a year ago.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is expected to announce August visitation figures and the Nevada Gaming Control Board will deliver gaming revenue statistics on Wednesday.
