by · Las Vegas Review-Journal

Lost pets over the Independence Day weekend accounted for 91 of the 117 animals taken in by The Animal Foundation, the agency said Monday.

The total also includes strays, confiscations and owner surrenders, a spokesperson said.

The Animal Foundation offers these tips if you are searching or have recovered a pet:

If your pet is missing

— Walk around your neighborhood and talk to your neighbors. Ask them to check their garages, yards, and any other places where your pet may be hiding.

— Contact your pet’s microchip company to make sure your contact information is up to date.

— Upload photos of your pet to lost and found pet groups on social media, Nextdoor, and Petco Love Lost.

— Post flyers throughout your neighborhood with your pet’s photo, description, and your contact information.

— Search The Animal Foundation’s lost and found page to view all pets currently at the shelter. If your lost pet is at The Animal Foundation, come to the shelter immediately to bring them home. If you still can’t find your pet, call The Animal Foundation’s Pet Support Hotline at 702-760-PETS for help.

If you find a lost pet

— Check the pet for an ID tag that includes the owner’s contact information.

— Walk the pet around your neighborhood and ask your neighbors if they recognize the animal.

— Knock on doors and send texts to your neighbors to help locate the owner.

— Take clear photos of the pet and upload them to lost and found pet groups on Facebook, Nextdoor, and Petco Love Lost.

— Have the pet scanned for a microchip.

— If you still can’t find the owner, call The Animal Foundation’s Pet Support Hotline at 702-760-PETS for additional assistance.

Bringing the animal to the shelter should be a last resort. Most animals who end up at the shelter are never reclaimed.
