$130M 215/Summerlin interchange project surpasses halfway mark

The yearslong $130 million 215 Beltway/Summerlin Parkway interchange project has passed the halfway point.

As of the end of August, about 58 percent of work has been billed, slightly ahead of expected pace for the 1,102-day project, according to Dan Erickson, project manager of the 215/Summerlin Parkway interchange revamp.

The project includes revamping interchange ramps, adding a new flyover ramp from 215 southbound to Summerlin Parkway eastbound, adding five new vehicular bridges and adding three new pedestrian trail bridges.

Crews have finished all but one of the vehicular bridges, with the final one set for completion by year’s end, Erickson said. Additionally, workers are adding several walls throughout the project’s scope.

The good news for motorists is that the majority of upcoming work tied to the project does not require major lane closures.

“This project shouldn’t have any closures coming up anytime soon,” Erickson said. “The major portion of the work is the walls and bridge, and that is all outside of traffic.”

Despite no major lane closures, one area of the project has consistent congestion.

“Backups I see are where you’re heading south (on 215) and climbing that hill, concrete trucks or big trucks climbing the hill from Cheyenne towards Lake Mead,” Erickson said. “That backs traffic up whenever there’s a big truck there, because they can only go up 10 mph up the hill.”

A major milestone will be when vehicles will begin to travel on the new Summerlin Parkway westbound ramp to 215 northbound, Erickson said.

“It’s going to go under that new ped bridge on the northeast corner,” Erickson said. “That should happen maybe November or December. Cars will be on the ultimate alignment. It’s getting close.”

Paths leading to the now-complete pedestrian and bike bridges won’t come online for some time, as work remains to do to get those up and running.

“That won’t happen till closer to the end of the project because there’s still a lot of dirt to move and things like that are going on in the project,” Erickson said.

Work is scheduled in the following areas between Monday and Oct. 23:

Mainline 215:

■ On the 215 in both directions between Far Hills Avenue and Lake Mead Boulevard.

Freeway ramps:

■ 215 northbound off-ramp to Far Hills.

■ 215 northbound off-ramp to Summerlin Parkway.

■ Far Hills ramp to Summerlin Parkway.

■ Far Hills on-ramp to 215 southbound.

■ Far Hills on-ramp to 215 northbound.

■ Summerlin Parkway westbound on-ramp to the 215 southbound.

Summerlin Parkway

■ Summerlin Parkway westbound between Anasazi Drive and 215 southbound on-ramp.

■ Summerlin westbound Parkway’s new on-ramp to 215 northbound.

The massive construction project began in February 2025 and is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2028.

As the work is ongoing, motorists are reminded to obey the posted speed limits and to practice extra caution while traveling through a work zone.

“Please slow down through construction zones,” Erickson said. “We’ve had a few crashes.”
