LETTER: AI is all the scare

I was an elementary student in the early 1960s. “The Jetsons” was a leading Saturday morning cartoon, and I remember discussions that robots would take over the world. Today robotic works are everywhere — for example in car manufacturing. However it is not the end of the world, nor human civilization.

Computers in the 1970s and home computers in the 1980s were going to eliminate all jobs and render humans unnecessary and inert. Now artificial intelligence is all the scare. It is another new tool in an emerging world. The response should not be non-development, but the application of the tool.

Each generation is faced with new and growing advancements, and we do not need to further hype and fearmonger upcoming inventions and applications. Federal and state representatives are right to look at these developments, but with an understanding of the uses, not an intention to eliminate progress. Emotional discussions and reactions are not the proper response, Calm rational processes are in need. The same for data centers. Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) has no place in broad thinking and application.
