This popular west London indoor market could be forced to close
by Eloise Feilden · Time Out LondonThere are few parts of London where you can grab a cup of freshly-squeezed juice, have a quick palm reading and get your phone fixed all in one place, but that’s the magic of Queensway Market. Strolling down the road from Bayswater station, you’d be forgiven for missing the entrance altogether if you weren’t paying attention, given how easily its yellow façade blends in with the plethora of souvenir shops which clutter Queensway.
But for those in the know, the indoor labyrinth of stalls is a treasure trove providing anything and everything your heart could desire, and all at a good price.
Which is why, when it was announced that this neon-lit maze could be torn down to make way for a Whole Foods, locals snapped into action. A petition has been created by residents to protect the beloved local market from being taken over by Amazon, which owns the upscale grocery store.
‘Local independent businesses, which bring character and diversity to Queensway Market, are at risk of being forced out,’ the petition warns.
Posted on Change.org on April 8, it describes the market as a ‘cultural and economic hub for the community’, and one which has served its neighbours for decades.
‘The market is a melting pot of cultures, offering a variety of foods and goods that reflect the diverse backgrounds of its vendors and customers. By replacing it with a corporate chain, we lose a valuable space that nurtures cultural exchange and understanding, vital in our ever-globalising world,’ it says.
Foodies may know Queensway as the neon-lit home of Malaysian gem Normah’s. The home-style cafe, which serves simple, authentic Malay cooked to perfection, is a Time Out favourite. It’s just one of several businesses currently inhabiting Queensway Market which could be forced out if redevelopment plans go ahead.
Locals have urged both Westminster City Council and Amazon to explore alternatives. The petition calls on the authorities to invest in renovating the market to attract more visitors while maintaining its ‘independent spirit and cultural richness’.
