Eagle Scout project helps older adults stay safe

A Dallas 14-year-old Scout is giving back to older adults in his community with a project that will keep them safe from the sun.

Charlie McGinnis, who is a freshman at St. Mark's School of Texas, has been a Boy Scout since fifth grade. His recent Eagle Scout project at Juliette Fowler Communities was his chance to lead a team and create something that would make a difference for older adults.

McGinnis chose Fowler for his project after helping his older brother, James, complete his own Eagle Scout project there in 2024. James built a pergola with a table and chairs, creating a shady place for residents to gather.

Then it came time for a new ask. The facility told Charlie their residents could use some help when it comes to meeting their shared-ride drivers. They said their campus is so large, drivers have trouble locating residents at pickup. A designated shared-ride station would help and would also provide shade for the residents while they wait.

Charlie answered the call and worked with his grandfather to design the structure after researching different designs and kits. With the help of family and fellow scouts from Troop 82, he got it done.

“The hardest part was the planning and design,” Charlie said. “You want to get it right before you get there. What excited me the most was leading a team. I haven’t completed such a large project before, and it’s exciting to see the payoff. I also love meeting the residents.”

The scouts worked over Labor Day weekend to complete the structure, adding a roof and a bench. They will come back later to paint the station.

The residents were thankful too.

“Even if we aren’t waiting for a ride, we can come sit in the shade and watch games at the park,” Paul Provost, a resident, said. “We have enjoyed watching the scouts build this and look forward to using it.”
