Gaming Laptop CPU Temps Drop 15°C With This Simple Desk Change

Gaming laptops often run hot because their compact designs leave limited space for cooling, but one user found a surprisingly simple way to reduce CPU temperatures without opening the laptop or changing any hardware. By moving the laptop from a wooden desk to a metal surface, the user reported a temperature drop of up to 15°C while gaming.

A Reddit user named MentalReserve235 shared the results after testing Cyberpunk 2077, a demanding game that puts heavy load on both the CPU and GPU. On a wooden desk, the laptop’s CPU usually stayed between 80°C and 90°C, while switching to a metal surface brought temperatures down to roughly 75°C to 83°C.

The user explained that the laptop pulls cool air through intake vents on the underside, so the cooler metal surface appears to help lower the temperature of the incoming air. Metal also transfers heat more effectively than wood, which can help the area beneath the laptop stay cooler during long gaming sessions.

Better airflow can help even more

Laptop owners who do not have access to a metal desk can still improve cooling by raising the rear of the machine with a stand or small feet. This creates more space beneath the intake vents and allows the cooling fans to pull in more air.

Users looking for larger temperature reductions can also consider CPU or GPU undervolting, although support depends on the hardware. Repasting with materials such as PTM7950 can also improve cooling, but opening a gaming laptop requires more care and carries additional risk.

One thing users should avoid is cooling the metal surface with ice or anything extremely cold, since condensation can form and potentially damage internal components.
