Apple’s MacBook Pro Storage Prices Push Modder To Build His Own 8TB SSD Upgrade

Apple’s high storage upgrade prices have pushed one MacBook Pro owner to take a risky route, as he upgraded his machine to an 8TB SSD instead of paying Apple’s $3,000 premium for the same jump from 2TB to 8TB.

The upgrade sounds tempting on paper, especially because the required 8TB NAND pack reportedly cost around $800, which is far lower than Apple’s official storage pricing. However, the process also shows why most users should avoid trying this at home, since one wrong step can damage the MacBook Pro permanently.

According to Redditor arduinoRPi4, the full upgrade took around 12 hours and required advanced micro-soldering tools, including a hot air rework station, microscope soldering, BGA stencil work, and reballing. He also said that only specific NAND chips work with these Macs, so finding the right parts adds another major challenge before the actual repair even begins.

The modder warned that users need at least two to three years of electronics experience before attempting this kind of SSD upgrade. He explained that upgrading to 2TB is easier because it mainly involves the NAND chips, but moving to 8TB requires extra work on tiny power components around the storage system.

That part matters because macOS needs to recognize the storage like a factory configuration, rather than an unsupported aftermarket change. As a result, the 8TB upgrade needs reverse engineering, careful component matching, and a high level of precision.

For skilled repair technicians, this mod proves that Apple’s expensive storage upgrades are not technically impossible to avoid. For regular MacBook Pro users, the safer option remains buying the required storage at checkout or using external drives, because a failed soldering attempt can turn an expensive laptop into a dead machine.
