Former PlayStation Boss Shuhei Yoshida Has Mixed Feelings About Steam Machine

Former PlayStation Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has shared a mixed early review of Valve’s new Steam Machine, and his comments point to the same debate already building around the device.

Yoshida said the system has some smart ideas, especially on the software side, but he also raised concerns about 3D performance, long game boot times, controller feel, and the price. His biggest issue appears to be the system’s default 1080p output, which makes the hardware feel closer to the PS4 era than a true rival to PS5 or Xbox Series X.

Valve had earlier positioned the Steam Machine around 4K gaming through AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, but the company later softened that claim to “up to 4K gaming.” That change now feels more important after Yoshida’s hands-on comments, since performance expectations remain a major part of the discussion.

At the same time, Yoshida praised the user interface and said the Steam Machine feels easy to use. He also liked the option to power on the device from the Steam Controller, along with smaller design touches like swappable faceplates and random boot videos.

However, the Steam Controller also received criticism, as Yoshida found the touchpad too sensitive and the analog sticks too loose for his liking. He later said he was still enjoying the device, especially its quiet performance and compact size.

The price remains the biggest challenge for Valve, as Yoshida suggested the Steam Machine makes more sense for enthusiasts and industry users than regular buyers. Early reports of “Red Line of Death” hardware failures also add pressure at a time when Valve needs strong first impressions.
