OpenAI Reportedly Buys Tens of Thousands of Mac Minis and Mac Studios for AI Workloads

OpenAI has reportedly purchased tens of thousands of Apple Mac mini and Mac Studio systems as demand for machines capable of handling AI workloads continues to grow. The systems are reportedly being used for reinforcement learning and computer-use agents, giving Apple hardware a larger role in AI infrastructure than many expected earlier this year.

The Information reports that OpenAI has acquired tens of thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio devices over the past few months, while Anthropic is also reportedly renting Macs through Amazon Web Services. Apple’s unified memory architecture and fast Thunderbolt connectivity make these machines useful for workloads that require large memory pools and low-latency communication between systems.

Apple recently introduced updated Mac mini and Mac Studio models, including the M6 Mac mini and M5 Ultra Mac Studio, which could attract further demand from AI companies looking for compact systems with strong local computing performance.

NVIDIA RTX Spark PCs are also seeing strong demand

Taiwan’s Economic Daily reports that the first batch of NVIDIA RTX Spark systems has already sold out ahead of their expected launch this fall. ASUS, MSI, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft are reportedly among the companies securing early supply.

The higher-end N1x platform combines a 20-core Grace CPU with a Blackwell-based RTX 5070 GPU, up to 128GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, and support for NVIDIA’s CUDA and TensorRT software ecosystem.

N1x systems are reportedly expected to cost around NT$110,000, roughly $3,400, while ASUS and MSI are already asking NVIDIA for additional supply after exhausting their initial allocations.
