GTA 6 Could Skip 60 FPS as Rockstar May Prioritize Visual Detail on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
by Matt Lawrence · OnMSFTGTA 6 could launch with a 30 FPS lock on consoles, as Rockstar Games appears to be focusing heavily on world detail, simulation, physics, and visual quality across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Digital Foundry believes a 60 FPS mode looks unlikely because GTA 6 seems far more demanding than many current-generation open-world games, especially with its dense city locations, fast vehicle traversal, water movement, air travel, and physics-heavy systems.
Why 60 FPS Looks Difficult for GTA 6
The main issue appears to be CPU demand, as open-world games with heavy simulation usually need more processing power to manage traffic, crowds, vehicles, physics, and real-time world behavior.
Rockstar has also followed this approach before, as GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and other major releases launched at 30 FPS on consoles while focusing more on graphics, animation, and world design.
Some leaks have claimed that GTA 6 will include quality and performance modes, but those details remain unconfirmed, and Digital Foundry suggests those modes could still target 30 FPS or 40 FPS instead of a full 60 FPS option.
PS5 Pro May Not Change the Situation
Even on PS5 Pro, GTA 6 may still struggle to reach 60 FPS because the console mainly improves GPU power, ray tracing, and upscaling, while its CPU upgrade remains limited.
A 40 FPS mode now looks like the most realistic middle ground, especially for players using displays that support higher refresh rates.
For now, Rockstar has not confirmed GTA 6’s final frame rate options, but based on the game’s scale and detail, a stable 30 FPS launch looks more likely than a 60 FPS performance mode.
