Windows 11 Finally Lets Users Opt Out of Persistent OneDrive Backup Reminders

Microsoft has started giving Windows 11 users a clearer way to stop persistent OneDrive backup reminders, adding an “Opt out of backup” option to a full-screen prompt that previously kept asking users to try again after three days.

The change gives users more control over OneDrive notifications, especially for people who do not want Windows repeatedly pushing cloud backup after they have already decided against using the service.

Windows Latest spotted the updated prompt on a PC running a stable version of Windows 11 24H2. Earlier versions of the OneDrive message mainly offered a “Remind in 3 days” option, which meant the notification kept returning even when users had no plans to enable backup.

Microsoft still asks users to reconsider

Selecting “Opt out of backup” does not immediately close the process, as Microsoft then presents another screen with options such as “Skip for now” and “Backup now.” However, the new opt-out choice gives users a more direct path to stop the recurring OneDrive backup prompt.

Microsoft continues to recommend OneDrive for protecting files and photos, although Windows 11 does not require users to rely on the service for cloud storage. Users can continue storing files locally or choose alternatives such as Google Drive and other cloud platforms.

The change comes as Microsoft continues adjusting Windows 11 based on user feedback, including performance work aimed at PCs with 8GB of RAM and new Phone Link controls for remotely restarting or shutting down a computer.

For users frustrated by repeated OneDrive reminders, this small change removes one of the more persistent interruptions built into Windows 11.
