Intel Core i9-13900K Shows 155°C Temperature, but the Reading Is Likely Wrong

An Intel Core i9-13900K recently appeared to reach an alarming temperature of 155°C while using only 93W of power, but the processor was almost certainly safe because the monitoring software displayed an incorrect unit or faulty reading.

The temperature likely represented 155°F rather than 155°C, which converts to about 68°C and falls within a normal operating range for a Core i9-13900K running a demanding game with a capable cooling system.

Why the 155°C Reading Does Not Make Sense

Intel sets the Core i9-13900K maximum operating temperature at 100°C, and the processor automatically lowers its clock speeds when it approaches that limit. The computer would also shut down to protect the hardware before the processor reached a temperature anywhere near 155°C.

The screenshot showed the processor using around 93W while running Cyberpunk 2077, which makes a genuine 155°C reading even less believable. Intel rates the chip for a sustained 125W base power, while its maximum turbo power can reach 253W under heavier workloads.

At higher power levels, the Core i9-13900K often requires a strong air cooler or liquid cooling system to stay below its thermal limit. However, a 68°C reading at 93W remains reasonable and does not suggest any cooling failure.

Temperature monitoring apps sometimes report incorrect CPU or GPU values because of software bugs, sensor conflicts, or unit errors. Closing and reopening the monitoring program often restores the correct reading, while restarting the computer can also help.

Users should compare temperatures through another monitoring app before shutting down their system, especially when the displayed number goes beyond the processor’s physical safety limits.
