Will Tesla’s ‘flying’ Roadster work? Musk says ‘it will probably work’

by · The Washington Times

Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a new Roadster sports car that he described as “flying” during a livestreamed event Thursday at a SpaceX test facility in Texas.

In the demonstration, the car launched from a ramp, clung upside down to the surface, flew off the end and rolled 180 degrees midair to land on its wheels.

Mr. Musk said the car uses “ultra high-pressure air tanks” for propulsion and that its “success is not guaranteed,” but “it will probably work.”

He said the Roadster would go into production in 2028, but prices were not announced.

Tesla’s website lists a Performance model, which can be reserved with a $5,000 deposit, and a limited-edition Thrust model that cannot yet be reserved. It also lists a flying Rocket model, billed with a “full flight system,” that will be offered by invitation only.

Wall Street analyst Dan Ives said in a research note that the Roadster will not move the volume or revenue needle but restores the brand’s halo and highlights the Tesla-SpaceX relationship.
