The Princess of Wales has chosen an historic gem with an intriguing story for an appearance at major royal event.

As Kate joined Prince William to welcome the Sultan of Oman to the UK on a State Visit, she choses an eye catching jewel in an unusual setting.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had the important job of welcoming His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik at the very start of the State Visit. They travelled to the Sultan’s residence in London ahead of the formal ceremonies and accompanied him to Windsor where King Charles offered the official welcome.

For this prestigious event, the Princess of Wales chose a dark green coat dress which she accented with an historic emerald which is part of a brooch set that links Kate to a host of other royal women.

Kate’s jewel pick was the Prince of Wales Feather Brooch which was given, over 150 years ago, to Alexandra of Denmark when she married the then Prince of Wales.

The brooch was a gift from the people of North Wales. It features an oval containing the Prince of Wales feathers made of diamonds and with emerald tips. For this appearance, Kate chose to include the emerald drop which is part of the brooch. Previously, she has worn it without the emerald.

The brooch was used often by Alexandra when she was Princess of Wales and it later passed to The Queen Mother who was fond of it. In 1981, it was presented to Lady Diana Spencer when she married the future King Charles. Diana famously wore it as a pendant.

Following her own marriage in 2005, the now Queen Camilla also used the brooch.

The current Princess of Wales has worn the piece several times since 2022 and it’s a favourite piece for Kate for State Visits.

After accompanying the Sultan of Oman to Windsor, the Prince and Princess of Wales took part in the formal welcome ceremony which included a carriage procession.

Later, there was a lunch hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The first day of the State Visit will end with a glittering State Banquet at Windsor Castle.
