Could a Cash Register Free Store Make it in Amarillo?
· NewsTalk 1290The thoughts are pretty strong when it comes to self-checkout at stores in Amarillo. Though there are some people who love the convenience and the speed that they can get out of the store a lot of people hate it. They hate feeling like they are now an employee.
The problems that you face if an employee happens to think you are stealing can be a real headache. Sometimes the pure frustration when it comes to ringing up produce. It can be just too much for some people. It has caused some stores to talk about getting rid of the option.
I don't think that will really happen. I think self-check-out is here to stay. It cuts down on employees having to be hired and trained. The problem is it leads to frustration among shoppers.
So let's move it a step further. There is a Sam's Club in Grapevine outside Dallas that opened as a totally cashier-less store. How is that even possible? I mean not only will they not have cashiers they also will not have cash registers.
It will all be done on the app. I have used the Sam's app and used the Scan & Go concept. It was nice. I was able to scan as I shopped and then just walked out the door. One might think that stealing could be a big headache but they will, of course, have safeguards in place for that.
In a store like this computers will be put in place. AI will be used through an archway at the store. That archway is "computer-vision based" and your cart will be scanned and compared to your digital receipt.
Would this be something you think would work in Amarillo? The convenience in a store like Sam's would be huge. I know many of weekends I have walked in and saw the long lines. That would be nice.
Is this the future of shopping?
