Amarillo’s Rockrose Sports Complex Moves Completion Date Up
· NewsTalk 1290It's a project here in Amarillo that I've been super invested in since I first heard about it. The Rockrose Sports Complex is something I've felt Amarillo has desperately needed, and when I moved here five years ago, I was stunned it didn't already have something like it.
Youth sports have absolutely exploded since then in Amarillo, and Kids Inc. recognized this. They knew they needed a place that could house different youth events and tournaments, so they went to work. The facility was to be privately funded and fully paid off by the time it was built. They haven't quite reached the full amount needed, but they got enough to get to work.
Rockrose Sports Complex Ahead Of Schedule
Get to work is exactly what they did. So much so that they are actually AHEAD of schedule on building it, and that's great news. I was convinced that my youngest son wouldn't get the chance to experience a baseball tournament there, but it looks like he just might be able to. Thanks to the lack of winter, crews have been able to crank away every day.
The baseball and softball fields are already formed, the outfield fences are up, and crews are installing the backstops for them as we speak. Once those are finished? They'll lay the turf down on those fields, as well as the football fields. That is expected to take place in the next 45 days.
When Is Completion Of The Complex Expected
When they first began the project, they were expecting to have it finished by April 27th, 2027. Because of the extremely mild and dry winter, that date has now moved up to March 9, 2027. Should that projection hold, it should be right in time for the travel baseball tournament schedule to get in full swing and be able to use the fields.
Going back to the funding of the project, Kids Inc. President and CEO Jimmy Lackey says they've raised over $30 million for the project, which is what allowed them to get to work. He says they still need about $8 to $10 million to finish up the project, so hopefully that amount can get covered so they can stay on track. It's such a great thing for the youth of Amarillo, and I can't wait for it to be done.
