The Amarillo Treasure Hunt: Which Neighborhood Has the Best Sales?
· NewsTalk 1290Whether you are throwing them or even finding the best deals, garage sales are big business in Amarillo. I've seen families host them multiple times a year and really make a killing, turning a simple cleanup into a total win.
It really doesn't matter if you're the one clearing out the driveway or the one out there hunting for a steal; it's all about making the most of what you have.
Some neighborhoods come together to host the mother of all garage sales and have as many families as possible take part. This is a win for everyone. Foot traffic is usually much higher for those selling in a multi-family event. The treasures seem to be plentiful for those buying with many garages to pick through in one area.
That is important with the gas going up and down all summer long. Some of these garage sales in our area seem to happen when a family is moving out of the area. They decide to downsize and sell what they can before the big move.
That was the last time I had a garage sale. Back when I was moving from a huge home in Wolflin and deciding to get a smaller home, I needed to sell what I could. A move is the best time to have a garage sale. I mean, it's easier to try to sell it than move it.
The Early Bird Reality: Preparing for the Morning Rush
Every Amarillo garage sale seems to go the same way. The seller posts their stuff somewhere on social media. That way, they get the word out. Some people try to buy it right there, while others clearly say they won't answer questions and they have to come by. Once you have everything priced and start bringing out the goods on the morning of the sale, be prepared for the early birds who are determined to be first in line.
The Art of the Hunt: Why Amarillo Loves a Good Sale
Then comes the steady stream of shoppers picking through your stuff. You will get the professional garage sellers who are always haggling over prices. It's going to happen, so be prepared.
Neighborhood Profiles: Where to Find Specific Treasures
In Amarillo, the success of a garage sale weekend is all about the "where". Depending on whether you are looking for vintage treasures, high-end furniture, or just a neighborhood-wide event, different areas of the city offer completely different offerings.
- Wolflin: You can find some high-end goods. Maybe even some goodies from your past. These garage sales can bring you some nostalgia.
- Sleepy Hollow: If you are geared for some high-end household goods and designer clothing, you have a good chance of finding them here. Also, be on the lookout for nice home decor.
- City View: This neighborhood is famous for hosting those community-wide garage sales. You can hit a lot of garage sales in a short area. A great place for baby gear, tools, and general household items.
- Plemons-Eakle Historic District (Oliver-Eakle): Similar to Wolflin, but it's possible to find more eclectic, artistic items. The chance is good that you can find a nice "hidden gem".
Amarillo is a great place for garage sales. You can find some really good treasures on any given weekend. The great thing about our area is that there are not many weekends that you won't be able to find a sale or two around the city.
If you are looking and having trouble, start by checking Amarillo Marketplaces and just doing a search for garage sales in our area. Happy hunting.
