Brace Yourself, Record Breaking Heat Coming To Amarillo

It looks like Amarillo is on track to break another record this week. In case you haven't been paying attention, we have a pretty good record-breaking streak in the Texas panhandle. The good thing is that we're not seeing triple digits. Those days are behind us for now. The bad news is that we're not getting a break from the heat. We're getting quite the opposite.

Amarillo On Track For More Record-Breaking Heat In October

The National Weather Service Amarillo put out some very interesting information regarding the highs for the week in the Texas panhandle. If you were hoping for something that feels a bit more like "October" in the afternoons, you can keep hoping. It's going to be awfully warm for this time of year.

According to the National Weather Service, Thursday looks to be the day when we'll possibly, once again, break the record high in Amarillo. The forecasted high on Thursday is 88 which would tie the current record set in 2012, the year that the world was supposed to end. All we need is to see 89, and the record belongs to 2024.

Why Is Texas So Hot In October 2024

October summer is upon us, and we've seen temperatures that are above the average for a big chunk of the month. From the Texas panhandle to the southernmost reaches of the Lone Star State, it's warmer than most of us think it should be. Not only that, but some places are seeing the driest October on record.

One of the reasons is high pressure. Supposedly, it's this high pressure that exists across the region that's pushing temperatures higher. There's also dry air supposedly helping push the temps up. La Nina is also a culprit in the hotter weather we're having. La Nina climate patterns typically lead to drier conditions. As we've learned dry air helps prop up those afternoon highs.

Hopefully, soon we get a break from these warmer temperatures, and keep an extra finger crossed for some moisture at some point
