Another hot and sunny day ahead with 37°C maximum; Temperatures peaking tomorrow
Thursday will be another tropically hot day in the inland Netherlands, with highs up to 37 degrees Celsius. The northern parts of the country will be a bit cooler thanks to a moderate northeasterly wind. Friday will be the hottest day of the week with temperatures reaching 39 degrees inland. Cooler weather will return from Monday, according to Weeronline.
The KNMI has a code orange warning in place for extreme and oppressive heat. The warning will remain in place until at least Saturday. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated, and wear sunscreen.
In several regions, minimum temperatures did not drop below 20 degrees overnight. Temperatures will shoot up quickly in the first half of the morning. “In the southeast, it will be scorching hot with temperatures of 36 to 37 degrees. In many other places, afternoon temperatures will be between 30 and 35 degrees, and in the north, the heat will be somewhat more bearable at 26 to 29 degrees,” meteorologist Matthijs van der Linden said.
Tonight is expected to be the hottest night since temperature measurements started in the Netherlands in 1901. Temperatures will not drop below 24 degrees at the national weather station in De Bilt. The previous record for the hottest night ever recorded was on July 27, 2018. Then, temperatures climbed to 23.6 degrees Celsius in De Bilt.
Friday will also be abundantly sunny and even hotter, with temperatures peaking at 39 degrees in the southeast. In the north of the country, it will be much hotter than on Thursday, with maximums between 33 and 36 degrees. Even the Wadden Islands will have a tropical day, with temperatures of 29 to 33 degrees. “The exceptional heat is accompanied by poor air quality. Due to smog, more people will experience respiratory problems,” Van der Linden said.
The heat will persist into the weekend, with the southeast and east reaching 37 degrees, the Randstad 34 degrees, and the coast 29 degrees on Saturday. “There will be significant sunny periods, but some clouds will also move across the country, and especially later in the afternoon and evening, there is a chance of a few rain and thunderstorms.”
Sunday will be a mix of cloud cover and sunshine, with rain and thunderstorms expected. The east will see another tropical day, with maximums between 30 and 34 degrees. In the central and western parts of the country, it will be 25 to 29 degrees. “Although it is less warm than the previous days, the air is very humid, making it oppressively hot.”
From next week, temperatures will return to more typical values. Monday will still be summery warm inland, with maximums between 25 and 28 degrees, but in the days that follow, afternoon temperatures will range between 21 and 24 degrees. “These are very normal values for the time of year,” Van der Linde said. The weather will be a mix of sunshine and showers, accompanied by a moderate north to northwesterly wind.
