KNMI issued first localized warning for dense fog in central Netherlands and Den Bosch

The Dutch meteorological institute KNMI issued its first localized warning for hazardous weather on Saturday for dense fog in the central Netherlands and Den Bosch. Visibility could drop below 200 meters. The agency advised drivers to reduce speed and increase following distance.

The warning covered an area roughly between Utrecht and Den Bosch, with possible dense fog also near Werkendam and Geertruidenberg. The fog was expected to persist until midnight, but the KNMI lifted the alert mid-evening.

Until recently, KNMI warnings applied to entire provinces. Since the beginning of this week, the weather service has been able to issue more geographically targeted alerts so people know more precisely where hazardous weather is expected.

The change follows a legislative amendment. Since August, the KNMI has also been sending separate alerts to app users about severe thunderstorms expected within 15 minutes of their location.
