The search for evidence in Overasselt is officially concluded

Police have ended the search for evidence near and around Overasselt, where a security guard was fatally shot on September 1. According to Omroep Gelderland, the shooting at the home of convicted drug criminal Jan G.- who could have been the intended target, marked the start of an overwhelming period for the local community.

The total number of arrested suspects in the case had eventually climbed to 35. The group includes at least 11 Dutch, 16 French, 2 Algerians, 1 Libyan, 1 Belgian, and 1 Ukrainian. The adults are aged 18 to 32, while two French minors are 16 and 17.

Prosecutors have brought 32 men before an examining magistrate. A 22-year-old Belgian was released but remains a suspect. Pretrial detention for the others was later extended. Police then arrested a 23-year-old Dutch man, with 33 suspects currently in custody.

After the shooting of the security guard Berry Leenders, police launched a massive hunt for evidence in and around Overasselt. Multiple weapons, as well as other materials, were recovered.

“We have dozens of firearms, clothing, and other items that we are all examining,” police spokesman Jop Heinen told Omroep Gelderland on Friday. “The searches looked different every day, based on earlier finds or information from the investigation.”

That does not mean that all the evidence has been recovered. “We unfortunately cannot offer that 100 percent guarantee. The advice remains: if you come across something suspicious or dangerous, call us immediately.”

The spokesperson also thanked the residents for their cooperation. “We understand that what happened here has a huge impact, and it takes time to process. That is why we will remain easily reachable and present in the coming weeks and months. If you need help or have questions, get in touch.”

Jan G., 28, the likely target, is expected to be extradited to the Netherlands. He was arrested a week ago near Soest, in Germany, on suspicion of involvement in a shipment of nearly 4,000 kilograms of cocaine.

Following the fatal shooting, a video appeared online of masked armed men alleging that Jan G. had stolen a massive quantity of cocaine. They said the drugs should be returned or G.'s "entire family, friends, and anyone associated with you will be shot dead."
