Full list of road closures as 'three-day spectacle' fair returns to Derbyshire town

A number of road closures will be in place around a Derbyshire town this week as thousands gather for the return of a much-loved festive fair. The Long Eaton Chestnut Fair will be a happy site for many Erewash residents this winter when it opens to the public once again on Thursday (November 21).

In order to keep organisers and attendees safe, Erewash Borough Council has now confirmed which roads around the town centre will be closed this week, with restrictions set to begin at 6pm on Monday (November 18) until midnight on Sunday (November 24).

The event, much like the Ilkeston Charter Fair back in October, will see a plethora of rides, food stalls and attractions scattered around Long Eaton throughout what the borough council has described as a "three-day spectacle". Despite roadworks lasting until Sunday, the event itself will take place from Thursday until Saturday.

Rides and stalls will stretch along the High Street through to the Market Place and the busy Beaconsfield car park and the public car park on Union Street will be closed to the public throughout the week. The full list of roads set to be closed include:

  • Market Place
  • Union Street
  • High Street
  • Claye Street
  • New Street

Market Place will be closed entirely, with the street set to be transformed into the main strip of the fair and High Street will also be closed from its junction with Market Place to Brown's Road. Union Street will be closed from its junction with Waverly Street to Market Place.

Claye Street will be closed from the junction with High Street to the southern boundary of 69 High Street, which will allow rear access to the shops. New Street will also be closed from its junction with High Street to the junction with Cross Street.

A spokesperson for Erewash Borough Council said: "Although nowhere near as old as the borough’s more celebrated Charter Fair, this three-day spectacle again promises to be just as much fun for all the family. The family-friendly Chestnut Fair in Long Eaton and our fun-filled Christmas lights switch-ons are a great opportunity to get in the festive mood. If you love white-knuckle rides, hook a duck and candy floss, don’t miss out.”

On Thursday, November 28, more crowds are set to gather in Long Eaton for the town's Christmas lights switch-on, followed by the annual switch-on in Ilkeston on Friday (November 29). For more details about the events, click the link here.
