Google Translate Gets Background Live Translation

Google Translate is getting an upgrade on Android, with the Live Translate service now available in the background. With this change, it means you can continue translating even if you switch apps or if your screen locks.

Google highlights that this feature is ideal if you need to take notes while also translating or for when you might be listening to a lecture in a different language. As of right now, it’s only listed for Android. On the iOS side, Google announced Listening Mode, a feature Android has had since June.

Powered by Gemini 3.5, Live Translate can automatically detect 70+ different languages and provide, “smooth, natural sounding translated speech.”
