The top of New Zealand's South Island continues to attract a broadening mix of visitors, with Nelson positioning itself as both a holiday destination and a venue for special-occasion travel. The Nelson Tasman region offers access to three national parks within a 90-minute drive of the city, alongside the Marlborough Sounds, Golden Bay, and the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Tourism Industry Aotearoa reported overseas visitor numbers up approximately 6 per cent in the year to September 2025, with regional centres including Nelson capturing a growing share of this dispersed demand.
