Being a parent who’s counted change at a register more than once, I’ve learned that the kindest thing a stranger does is rarely the whole story — the why underneath it usually is. The people here didn’t help because they had plenty to spare; several of them had almost nothing, and gave anyway, for reasons nobody standing nearby could have guessed.
