13 People Who Brought Compassion Into Their Home Gardens Through Backyard Landscaping, Growing Fresh Food, and Making Room for Bees and Wildflowers
Fall is the season gardeners give things away. Peonies get divided, wildflower seed gets scattered before the frost, and the last tomatoes end up on a neighbor’s porch. That generosity has a big audience. According to Garden Research, the research arm of the National Gardening Association, 33% of U.S. households, about 44 million, grew vegetables last year alone, and the share of first-year gardeners who said they wanted to grow food for their families rose from 30% in 2020 to 41% in 2025. But now in 2026, we know that behind those numbers are people planting for someone else too: a father building raised beds, a grandfather running a sweet corn stand, a girl handing over a root of pink peonies. Today, we found 13 people who brought compassion into their home gardens through backyard landscaping, fresh food and room for bees and wildflowers, and each one has something to hand you before the first frost.
