A hundred years ago | Operating on heart without anaesthetic
From The Hindu Archives, December 24, 1925: An Air Force Pilot who had been badly wounded during the War, was, we are told in “The Lancet,” in so critical a condition that an anaesthetic was out of the question. It was decided to render the area round the heart insensitive by injecting novocaine. Adhesions to the heart which had caused the trouble were removed while he chatted with the nurse.
