Spoilers follow.
"Marshals" Season 1 was a strange collection of episodes that oscillated between taut crime thriller, family drama, and action series, all within a regrettable network procedural framework. One week it looked as though we'd be getting a show about Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton covering up his family's crimes while simultaneously forging a new law enforcement career. The next, it seemed Kayce and Tate Dutton's (Brecken Merrill) grief at losing Kelsey Asbille's Monica Dutton would be the main focus. Then, Double-G showed up.
Country songster Riley Green played Kayce's former Navy SEAL squad mate Garrett Garvey on a show that seemed to revel in weaving new story threads while struggling to figure out which of its existing threads to follow. Double-G, as Logan Marshall-Green's Pete Calvin called him, was a troubled man — a haunted badass with the soul of an artist who just wanted to play his songs and forget about the fact that, as we eventually discovered, he was essentially responsible for the death of his, Kayce, and Pete's other SEAL teammate, "Roner." Then, disaster struck.
After just four episodes, Garrett was killed off — the victim of a barn fire that started under mysterious circumstances. Double-G, we hardly knew ye. Now, the "Marshals" Season 2 premiere has revealed who would be so evil as to torch Riley Green's handsome troubled soldier: Chris Mulkey's Tom Weaver.
Tom Weaver is responsible for Double-G's death on Marshals
The "Marshals" Season 2 premiere finally reveals why Tom Weaver wanted to kill Chief Thomas Rainwater (one of several "Yellowstone" characters who deserve their own spin-off). It seems the chief was going before Congress to try to move a controversial rare earth mine from Broken Rock Reservation land to the land owned by Weaver himself. That very mine was thought to be polluting the nearby river, which was how Monica Dutton's similarly controversial death occurred. Weaver didn't want it anywhere near his land and arranged to have Rainwater taken out. Meanwhile, he continued to try pressure Kayce Dutton into selling him the East Camp property. It seems Garrett Garvey became an unwitting victim in Weaver's schemes to take control of East Camp and prevent the moving of the mine.
At the end of the Season 2 premiere, Kayce and his team take Weaver into custody before Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) questions him and reports back to Kayce. "I did get one other thing out from Tom," she says. "His ranch hands started the barn fire." To which Kayce replies mournfully, "Garrett."
Yes it seems Double-G was killed by Weaver's goons. Back in Season 1, Garrett was working as a ranch hand at East Camp when a fire broke out in a nearby barn. While trying to rescue the horse inside, Garrett became trapped and suffered second-degree burns. He later died in the hospital and the fire was said to have been the result of a faulty space heater. At the time, this just seemed to be a way to wrap up Riley Green's brief guest spot by having his character go out a hero. Now, we know the truth. Weaver is responsible.
Will Garrett's death bring Kayce and Andrea together on Marshals?
The reveal about Garrett Garvey's death doesn't alter much about the character's arc or significance to the show. Garrett was responsible for Roner's death and he ultimately paid a comparable price. The fact that Tom Weaver's men started the fire only really serves to make Weaver seem more evil. The only possible significance this reveal could have would be if it brought Kayce Dutton and Andrea Cruz closer together.
In yet another wild divergence from other storylines, "Marshals" Season 1 seemed to set up a love triangle between Kayce, Andrea, and Dolly Weaver. For a moment at the end of Season 1, Episode 9, Andrea and Kayce looked as though they might be catching feelings for one another, sharing a quiet moment beneath a starry sky as Double-G serenaded them. Nothing further came of it, but in the "Marshals" Season 2 premiere, Cruz decides not to leave Montana and shares a couple of scenes with Kayce that suggest a romance could still blossom.
Cruz checks on Kayce as he's heading to rescue Tate Dutton and seems genuinely concerned for his wellbeing. Then, after Weaver is in custody and Dolly Weaver passes away from a car crash, Cruz checks in on him again, revealing that Weaver was responsible for the barn fire and asking Kayce how he feels now that Dolly is gone. It's subtle, but it suggests there might be something between the pair. Now that Weaver has been outed as Garrett's killer, the pair have a shared tragedy. Cruz was involved with Garrett prior to his death and Kayce obviously had a long history with him. Now, they share a common anger towards Weaver which might play into their relationship developing over the coming season.
