Brazilian Trans Woman Attacked in Rhodes by Tourists

A 24-year-old transgender woman from Brazil has reported being violently attacked in Rhodes, claiming that three unknown men assaulted her and her friend in the island’s Medieval City during the early hours of Sunday.

According to her complaint, the transwoman was walking through the area at around 5:00am when she encountered three men, believed to be tourists. She said one of the men pushed her onto the pavement, causing facial injuries and breaking one of her teeth.

Her 32-year-old friend, also from Brazil and a permanent resident of Portugal, attempted to intervene but allegedly suffered an attack by the other two men, sustaining an injury to her nose.

After the incident, local residents who heard the disturbance helped the transwoman and her friend leave the area. Several hours later, at around 9:30am, they filed a complaint against unknown perpetrators and provided police with details of the alleged assault.

Authorities said the incident reportedly began outside a nightclub before escalating into a confrontation in a square in the Old Town.

Alleged transphobic motive under investigation

The 24-year-old transwoman told police that the attack had a transphobic motive. Investigators are examining all available evidence to determine whether the incident involved a hate-based motive, which could affect the legal assessment of the case.

A forensic examination was ordered for both victims, documenting their injuries. The suspects remain unidentified, while the preliminary investigation continues.

Police search for suspects

Police are collecting witness statements and reviewing available surveillance footage from the Medieval City in an effort to identify the three alleged attackers.

Authorities believe the suspects may also have suffered injuries during the confrontation.

Despite the experience, the 24-year-old decided to remain in Rhodes and continue her holiday, receiving support from local business workers who assisted her after the incident.
