Myanmar Issues Red Alert as Depression Intensifies in Gulf of Mottama

Myanmar's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has issued a red alert after a well-marked low-pressure area over the northern Andaman Sea intensified into a depression on September 28. Located about 50 nautical miles south of Mawlamyine, the system is packing sustained winds of 35 mph and moving north-northwest.

The DMH forecasts the system will strengthen into a deep depression within 12 hours, making landfall between Thongwa (Yangon Region) and Kyaikto (Mon State). It is projected to track inland across Yangon, Bago, and Magway regions over the next 36 hours.

Through September 30, widespread heavy rainfall, squalls, and thunderstorms will impact central, southern, and coastal areas, including Yangon,  Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay. Offshore winds along the Gulf of Mottama and the Mon-Tanintharyi coast could reach up to 40 mph, generating waves between 10 and 12 feet.

Authorities warn coastal and river delta communities to prepare for flash floods, landslides, and gale-force winds, while advising all fishing trawlers, maritime vessels, and domestic flights to exercise extreme caution.
