The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday took Twisha Sharma's husband, Samarth Singh, into custody in connection with her suspicious death. This came after a court in Bhopal remanded the accused to the central agency's custody earlier in the day.

Samarth, who is a lawyer, was arrested by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Madhya Pradesh Police from Jabalpur and brought to Bhopal, where he was sent to police remand for seven days, till May 29, by a magistrate court, a lawyer said.

As the probe has already been taken over by the CBI, the SIT no longer requires his custody, Advocate Ankur Pandey told news agency PTI. Hence, Samarth was produced before the court, where the central agency sought his remand, the lawyer added.

Granting the plea, the court remanded Samarth in CBI custody, he said.

TWISHA SHARMA CASE: BRIEF OVERVIEW

The case was taken over by the CBI on Monday. Twisha Sharma, a former model-actor, was allegedly found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12. The central agency has re-registered a Madhya Pradesh police FIR showing Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh, who is a retired judge, as accused.

Taking over the investigation from the state police, the CBI invoked sections 80(2) (punishment for dowry death), 85 (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, which were levelled by the state police as well.

The police FIR was registered two days after Twisha's death. Her family members have repeatedly alleged that she was tormented by her in-laws, who were not satisfied with the dowry paid at the time of her marriage in December 2025. They have accused Samarth and his family of mental torture and domestic violence, and pushing the 33-year-old to take the extreme step.

Giribala Singh, however, has questioned Twisha's purported medical treatment and mental state. The case has triggered a widespread outcry across the country, with the woman's parents levelling allegations of procedural lapses by local authorities in Bhopal. Notably, Samarth was arrested in Jabalpur on May 22 after being absconding for 10 days.

On Sunday, a team of doctors from AIIMS-Delhi conducted a second postmortem of Twisha in Bhopal following directions from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, after her parents raised serious concerns about procedural lapses by local authorities.
