Channel Tunnel trains resume after power supply issue caused delays
by Lisa Hornung · UPIDec. 31 (UPI) -- Eurostar and LeShuttle resumed full operations on Wednesday after a shutdown due to an electrical issue, but travelers can still expect delays.
As of Wednesday morning, only three Eurostar trains, which take passengers between England and Europe via the Channel Tunnel, had canceled trips, according to Eurostar's website: Paris Gare du Nord, Brussels Midi and Amsterdam Centraal. Several routes were still delayed.
On Tuesday, Eurostar suspended all Channel Tunnel trains because of a power outage. Eurostar blamed the issue on an overhead power supply problem and told passengers to postpone their journeys. Trains resumed in the afternoon, though they were still delayed.
At the same time, LeShuttle, which carries passengers and their vehicles through the tunnel, had a broken down train, which had to be removed from the tunnel, causing even more delays.
Repair work on the power supply issue continued overnight, and rail services resumed Wednesday morning. But Eurostar passengers were urged to check their train's status in advance due to secondary delays or cancellations.
Eurostar added an extra London-to-Paris run Wednesday. The company apologized for the delays and said passengers are entitled to compensation, including 100% refund of their ticket price or 150% of the ticket price as an e-voucher.
LeShuttle trains from the Folkestone station in London saw delays earlier Wednesday, but are now running on time. At Calais, there are delays of up to an hour, which is down from earlier reports of six-hour delays.
