2 Las Vegas men face up to 5 years in prison, accused of aiming laser pointer at police helicopter

Two Las Vegas men in separate cases were indicted on charges for aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft.

The Department of Justice said in a release that James Bodie Moore III and Jason Lamars Lee both appeared in court Monday and face up to five years in prison if convicted.

Moore is accused of aiming a beam of a laser pointer multiples at and in the flight path of a Metropolitan Police Department helicopter on April 10, the release said. Lee faces similiar accusations of aiming the beam of a laser pointer “two times” at and in the flight path of a Metro helicopter on June 7.

Both men have jury trials scheduled for September.

Under the “FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012,” pointing a laser at an aircraft is a federal crime. Another Las Vegas man was sentenced to nine months in prison for pointing a laser at a police helicopter last Wednesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration said pilots reported 10,993 laser strikes in 2025.
