Nisyros Offers €3,000 Baby Bonus as Greek Island Battles Population Decline

The Greek island of Nisyros is offering families a €3,000 baby bonus for every child born to permanent residents, as local authorities take action to tackle the island’s declining population.

The one off payment was proposed by Nisyros Mayor Christofis Koronaios and unanimously approved by the municipal council.

To qualify, families must be registered with the municipality and permanently reside on Nisyros when their child is born.

The municipality says the €3,000 payment is the maximum amount permitted under Greece’s new local government code. The benefit will be tax free and will not be included when calculating income thresholds for other social welfare benefits.

Nisyros has allocated €9,000 in its 2026 municipal budget, allowing the initiative to begin immediately.

Nisyros considers monthly payments for children

Local authorities are also examining a further measure that could provide families with €150 per month for every child living on Nisyros until the age of five.

The proposed payment would add another layer of financial support for young families and form part of a broader effort to make life on the small southeastern Aegean island more attractive to younger residents.

Mayor Koronaios said the measures are designed to encourage young people to remain on Nisyros, start families and contribute to reversing the demographic decline affecting smaller Greek islands.

The island’s initiative reflects a wider demographic challenge facing Greece, particularly in remote and smaller communities where declining birth rates, ageing populations and the departure of younger residents have put pressure on schools, local services and the long term viability of communities.

Nisyros is now among a growing number of Greek municipalities exploring financial incentives aimed at encouraging births and helping families remain in their local communities.
