A plastic manufacturing business in Hmawbi Township, Yangon Region, has been fined more than K151 million and faces legal action after authorities uncovered the illegal use of electricity, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

During surprise inspections conducted on 16 June, officials found that the factory’s electricity meter had been tampered with. Investigators discovered altered seals and an internal control circuit that enabled the unlawful consumption of electricity.

The ministry said the violation resulted in the loss of 301,434 units of electricity. Compensation and penalties totalling K151,017,260 were paid to the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation on 19 June. The meter was removed, and the factory owner was charged under the Electricity Law.

The ministry added that it is continuing nationwide efforts to detect electricity theft and reduce power losses through monitoring systems, field inspections and public reports.
